- Apple Education store now has a student verification process and limits on products
Apple regularly discounts products like the Mac, iPads, and accessories for college students, but recently they made the whole process more complicated. Before, education prices on products were available to everyone, but now Apple uses a new verification system through UNiDAYS which makes you verify that you’re a student by putting in your name, school name, and a picture of your school ID. There are also limits for the amount of products you can buy using the deals. Verified students can only purchase 1 desktop, 1 Mac mini, 1 MacBook, 2 iPads, and 2 accessories. You can verify yourself if you’re a college student or got accepted into one on UNiDAYS through apple.com.
- Airline CEOs warn of a catastrophic crisis which can be caused by the activation of 5G C-band
Image: Verizon US Airline CEOs warn of a catastrophic crisis which can be caused by the roll out of Verizon and AT&T’s new 5G C-Band technology. The new technology can cause delays to passenger and cargo flights and can disrupt air travel. According to the FAA or Federal Aviation Administration, the new 5G C-Band technology could affect the altimeters onboard a plane which will prevent planes from flying in poor weather conditions. The FAA has restricted the technology from 50 major airports with towers near runways or airfields. Airline CEOs are asking for 5G C-Band to be restricted in at least a two mile radius around the airport. The FAA has allowed 5G C-Band technology to start rolling out on January 19, but restricted it from towers right next to major airports. Given the short time frame and the exigency of this completely avoidable economic calamity, we respectfully request you support and take whatever action necessary to ensure that 5G is deployed except when towers are too close to airport runways until the FAA can determine how that can be safely accomplished without catastrophic disruption. AT&T and Verizon have spent billions of dollars to improve their 5G network and roll out the new 5G C-Band technology. They were granted permission last year from the FCC or Federal Communications Commission to start rolling out the technology by the end of 2021. The roll out has been delayed after airline CEOs expressed concern over the interference the new 5G technology can have with the planes onboard instruments. AT&T and Verizon in a letter have stated that they will voluntarily turn on a limited number of towers with C-Band technology. Here’s AT&T’s response At our sole discretion we have voluntarily agreed to temporarily defer turning on a limited number of towers around certain airport runways as we continue to work with the aviation industry and the FAA to provide further information about our 5G deployment, since they have not utilized the two years they’ve had to responsibly plan for this deployment. We are frustrated by the FAA’s inability to do what nearly 40 countries have done, which is to safely deploy 5G technology without disrupting aviation services, and we urge it do so in a timely manner. We are launching our advanced 5G services everywhere else as planned with the temporary exception of this limited number of towers. Here’s Verizon’s response As the nation’s leading wireless provider, we have voluntarily decided to limit our 5G network around airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and our nation’s airlines have not been able to fully resolve navigating 5G around airports, despite it being safe and fully operational in more than 40 other countries. The C-Band technology will still rollout on January 19 but it will be limited to a few areas until the FAA is able to figure out how to solve issues related to air travel.

- Apple reportedly prototyped a battery powered HomePod years ago
Apple reportedly considered and prototyped a battery powered HomePod mini years ago, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his recent Power On newsletter. Gurman claims that he will be surprised if Apple actually launched a battery powered HomePod mini under the Apple brand, so this probably means that it won’t happen. The news comes after Apple recently discontinued the Beats Pill Plus which was the only battery powered speaker they offered.

- Apple’s AR/VR headset might get delayed until 2023
Image: RendersbyIan The Apple AR/VR headset is supposed to be the next big product category Apple will announce after the Apple Watch. The Apple AR/VR headset was supposed to launch at this year’s WWDC conference but new reports claim that it got delayed until 2023. In a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, he claims that Apple has run into some development issues with the headset. Gurman claims this will push back the launch of the headset “by at least a few months”. The development issues are reportedly caused by the software and cameras and also the device overheating. Gurman believes the overheating issues are being caused by the two chips in the headset and one of them is as powerful as the M1 Pro chips from the new MacBook Pro models. Earlier versions of the headset had external processors which would transmit data to the headset wirelessly to avoid overheating issues. Apple’s Cheif Designer at the time, Jony Ive disagreed with the idea and believed it would deliver a poor experience for the users. Apple is now planning to launch the headset at WWDC 2023 and also unveil their new operating system for the device called rOS and get developers to start building apps for the device.
- Next generation iPad Pro might feature a large glass Apple logo with support for MagSafe charging
The next generation iPad Pro might feature a large glass Apple logo on the back with support for MagSafe charging or regular wireless charging. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported how Apple is working on bringing a glass back to the iPad Pro to enable wireless charging. A recent report from 9to5mac claims that Apple is now testing out wireless charging with a large glass Apple logo on the back of the iPad Pro. The report also claimed how one of the prototypes has support for MagSafe charging. The MagSafe magnets on the iPad Pro are also said to be stronger than the ones on the iPhone and are capable of faster charging. 9to5mac claimed that their sources are familiar with Apple’s design plans. But it’s not clear if Apple will ever push out an iPad Pro with a large glass Apple logo to the market. However, there is still a possibility for wireless charging to be available on the new iPad Pro in a different format.
