After a series of rumors about the future of Twitter and Twitter Blue, Elon Musk, the new owner and CEO of Twitter announced on Twitter that Twitter Blue subscriptions will now cost $8.
The benefits of having Twitter Blue for $8 includes the fact that any user who is subscribed will receive a verified checkmark as well as other benefits including priority replies and fewer ads.
Celebrities who are at risk of identity theft in the platform will also have to pay $8 to keep their verified checkmark.
Many have criticized Musk's new move for the platform and the fact that he opened up the blue checkmark for everyone on Twitter. The blue verification checkmark on Twitter was for public figures or companies who can easily be impersonated on the platform by others, and the purpose of it was so users will know which account is legitimate.
Musk claims this move is done to give "power to the people" on the platform and to make everyone on the platform equal.
Musk also claims that the new update will reduce spam on Twitter which was a key reason for Musk's acquisition.
The update is now available to download for Twitter users.
