Earlier this year, OpenAI made strides in AI accessibility for Mac users with the release of a native ChatGPT app for macOS. Now, a substantial update enhances its functionality further, introducing a new feature that enables ChatGPT to interact directly with certain macOS applications like Xcode.
This upgrade lets ChatGPT access on-screen content from specific third-party software, providing seamless assistance for developers and other professionals by reading and analyzing code within applications like VS Code, Terminal, iTerm2, and Apple’s Xcode without requiring manual input or pasting.
Currently exclusive to the Mac app, OpenAI has plans to broaden integration with more applications over time. However, this new capability is initially available only to paid ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with further rollout to Enterprise and Education accounts anticipated in the coming weeks.
OpenAI has also emphasized user control, allowing subscribers to manage permissions and decide which apps ChatGPT can access, addressing privacy concerns. This expanded functionality aligns with Apple’s plans, as macOS 15.2 is set to introduce new Siri capabilities with ChatGPT integration, allowing Siri to answer questions based on on-screen content, though without app-specific interactions for now.
For Mac users eager to explore the enhanced ChatGPT features, the app is available for download on OpenAI’s website. While the core version remains free, subscribing to ChatGPT Plus unlocks additional capabilities, and OpenAI has also made the ChatGPT app available to Windows users.
