A French website claims to have obtained molds purportedly revealing changes to the MagSafe charging ring in the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup. These molds also hint at alterations in the camera layout for the base and Plus models of the iPhone 16.
MagSafe technology debuted with the iPhone 12 series, enhancing wireless charging convenience and reliability. Many users now rely on MagSafe not only for charging but also for securely attaching their iPhones to stands.
The system relies on a ring of magnets and coils, and if the molds obtained by French site ShopSystem are genuine, Apple seems to have succeeded in reducing the thickness of the ring.
A comparison between the molds for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro suggests a significant reduction in the thickness of the ring, resulting in a smaller outside diameter.
While the site suggests that this change could prompt accessory manufacturers to adjust their chargers, it's highly unlikely. The new iPhone lineup is expected to remain compatible with existing MagSafe and Qi2 chargers.
Furthermore, the molds indicate a vertical camera layout expected to be featured in the base model iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus. This layout is anticipated to enable spatial video recording capabilities across the entire lineup.
