While the iPhone 16 Pro will maintain a design similar to the iPhone 15 Pro, subtle yet impactful changes are on the horizon. Both the Pro and Pro Max models will sport slightly larger screens and significantly slimmer borders around the display.
According to IceUniverse, the iPhone 16 Pro could set a new benchmark with the thinnest smartphone bezels ever. This refers to the frame surrounding the screen, while the Dynamic Island display cutout will remain unchanged this year. However, there are whispers that Face ID might be moved under the display by 2025 with the iPhone 17, resulting in a smaller, circular cutout.
For now, the focus is on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, where the bezels, already reduced from 3.5mm to under 2mm between the 14 and 15 series, are expected to become even thinner. These improvements align with previous reports suggesting Apple will use Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology for the 16 Pro displays. This involves bending the wiring and circuitry near the screen's edge downwards, which has posed some production challenges.
The reduction in bezel width will not only enhance the visual appeal but also help offset the slight increase in overall device size due to larger screens. The iPhone 16 Pro will feature a 6.3-inch display, up from 6.1 inches, and the Pro Max will have a 6.9-inch display, up from 6.7 inches. Despite the larger screens, the devices will feel more manageable in hand due to the slimmer bezels.
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 16 series this fall, likely during a September event. Alongside the bezel and display improvements, the new models are anticipated to include the latest A18 processor, a new physical force-sensitive 'Capture Button' for improved photo and video capture, and for the first time, the 5x zoom feature will be available on the non-Max model.
