According to a new rumor from Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo on Twitter, he claims that Apple might finally make the switch to USB-C from lightning on the iPhone 15 models.
Kuo claimed that his latest surveys in the supply chain has lead him to believe that Apple will replace the Lightning port with a new USB-C port.
Here’s what Kuo said on Twitter:
My latest survey indicates that 2H23 new iPhone will abandon Lightning port and switch to USB-C port. USB-C could improve iPhone’s transfer and charging speed in hardware designs, but the final spec details still depend on iOS support.
It’s expected to see existing USB-C-related suppliers of Apple’s ecosystem (e.g., IC controller, connector) become the market’s focus in the next 1-2 years, thanks to vast orders from iPhones and accessories’ adoption of USB-C ports.
Even though the Lightning port on the iPhone has been highly profitable for Apple, regulations passed by the EU could force Apple to make the move to USB- C for the 2023 iPhone models.
The EU claims that having all smartphones use the same USB-C connector will prevent the massive throw out of unused cables.
Apple has already replaced the Lightning port with USB-C ports on the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and Mac.
Rumors from other sources suggest that Apple will completely move to a port less iPhone and will never switch to USB-C. Apple has already introduced MagSafe with the iPhone 12 which is a new magnetic wireless charger which attaches magnetically to the back of your iPhone, so it’s possible that Apple could use MagSafe as the only charging solution for the
iPhone.
