Customers with Out-of-warranty Apple Watch models won’t be able to get repairs due to import ban

Due to an impending import ban on Apple Watches with blood oxygen sensing technology, set to take effect after December 25, 2023, Apple faces limitations in repairing out-of-warranty Apple Watch models in the United States. The ban, initiated by the United States International Trade Commission due to a patent infringement claim by Masimo, prevents the importation of these watches. As a consequence, Apple is discontinuing U.S. online sales, with in-store sales concluding after December 24.

The ban specifically affects Apple Watch Series 6 and later, as well as the original Apple Watch Ultra. Apple will be unable to provide replacement programs (CRU) for these watches, necessitating customers to wait for hardware replacements. However, software-based repairs will still be available.

Apple is actively working on a software fix for the blood oxygen sensing algorithm, aiming to resolve the patent infringement issue and potentially resume sales in the future. Until a resolution is reached, warranty-covered Apple Watch models can still be replaced, and accessories like bands can be exchanged, with returns being accepted.

The possibility of intervention by the White House or a resolution through negotiations with Masimo remains on the table. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch SE and third-party retailers such as Best Buy, Target, and Walmart will continue sales of available models as long as supplies last.
