Apple's upcoming iOS 18 is set to showcase a significant emphasis on artificial intelligence, a shift largely influenced by a transformative experience that Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, had with GitHub Copilot. This information comes from a recent report by The Wall Street Journal.

GitHub Copilot, which leverages OpenAI's technology, assists developers by writing, debugging, and translating code. Federighi's encounter with Copilot in December 2022 turned him into a strong advocate for generative AI. Following this, he tasked Apple’s engineering teams with integrating AI across Apple’s software suite.

In response, Apple accelerated its AI development efforts, reallocating talent from other projects and engaging in discussions with AI leaders like OpenAI and Google. This dual approach aims to blend Apple’s proprietary AI models with external expertise.

The forthcoming iOS 18 is expected to showcase AI enhancements in various apps, including Messages, Mail, and Photos. Notably, Siri is set for a substantial upgrade, incorporating generative AI to enhance its capabilities and user interaction.

Federighi's push for AI has resulted in significant advancements within Apple’s software, promising a more intelligent and responsive user experience with iOS 18 and beyond. As Apple prepares to unveil these innovations, the integration of AI is set to redefine the functionality and efficiency of its ecosystem.
