This week, AT&T has taken decisive action in response to a significant data breach affecting a large number of its customers, both current and former. Approximately 7.6 million current customers and a staggering 65.4 million former customers have been impacted by the breach.
The compromised data includes a range of sensitive personal information, such as names, addresses, birth dates, account numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, and even social security numbers, along with stolen passcodes.
Despite previous assurances of no breach, AT&T now acknowledges the severity of the situation. While the breach itself occurred several years ago, the disclosure only emerged in March 2024. In response, AT&T is proactively resetting passcodes and engaging external cybersecurity experts to conduct thorough analysis and mitigate further risks.
It's reassuring to note that the leaked data does not include financial information or call histories. However, recognizing the potential implications for affected individuals, AT&T is stepping up with complimentary identity theft and credit monitoring services to help safeguard their personal information and provide peace of mind in the wake of this breach.
