Apple has revealed mock-ups of its next-generation wireless CarPlay, set to be integrated into vehicles by the end of 2023. The updated CarPlay aims to transform the entire display of the vehicle's dashboard, offering a unique theme for each automaker. The UI provides access to various vehicle features, such as radio and temperature settings, tailored to match the design aesthetics of brands like Porsche and Aston Martin.
In the Porsche setup, a three-dial layout features the speedometer on the left, complemented by a wallpaper mirroring the houndstooth seat pattern. Aston Martin's layout showcases a media display at the center, surrounded by the speedometer and tachometer, highlighted in the brand's signature green. Apple's new CarPlay delivers driving-specific data through the car's sensors while running apps from the iPhone. According to Apple, the phone does not store or track vehicle-sourced information.
This feature, announced at Apple's WWDC developer conference in 2022, offers an enhanced in-car experience, integrating with specific car keys, a simplified connection process, improved Siri functionality, and other changes. Unlike traditional CarPlay or Android Auto, Apple's approach aims to provide "the ultimate iPhone experience" in-car, managing the system through the user's phone.
Aston Martin is set to support this in the infotainment system launching next year in cars like the DB12 and DB12 Volante. While Porsche's plans are less clear, the integration of its systems is expected to go beyond existing setups with the launch of the all-electric Macan, with more details to be revealed next year.
