Apple Watch Series 10 to feature Sleep Apnea detection and health innovations, rolling out post-launch

Apple Watch Series 10

Apple is poised to introduce a new sleep apnea detection feature in its upcoming Apple Watch Series 10 according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

However, the feature may debut after the initial release of the device. This advanced capability, which enhances the watch's current sleep tracking functions, aims to alert users to potential sleep apnea conditions and recommend professional medical consultation for further evaluation.

However, the integration of this feature has encountered challenges, primarily due to technical difficulties involving the measurement of blood oxygen saturation—a critical component for detecting sleep apnea.

These complications arise amidst a legal tussle with Masimo, a company that has raised concerns over Apple’s use of certain health technology. Despite these hurdles, there's optimism that either a resolution with Masimo will be reached by September or Apple will successfully argue the broader utility of the blood oxygen sensor beyond measuring saturation levels directly.

Gurman also reported that while Apple is committed to incorporating sleep apnea detection, the feature might only be activated through a subsequent software update following the watch’s release. Additionally, another anticipated health feature aimed at detecting hypertension has proven less reliable in trials than expected, delaying its launch.

Externally, the Apple Watch Series 10 will retain the familiar design language of its predecessor, with its sleek, rounded edges. However, Apple has made several key refinements to enhance both aesthetics and functionality. The most noticeable change is a slimmer, more streamlined build that reduces bulk while maintaining the watch’s durability and water resistance. This sleeker profile is complemented by larger, more immersive display options, allowing for expanded screen sizes that provide users with more real estate for notifications, apps, and fitness tracking features.

These design upgrades also extend to the watch's case materials, which are expected to include new finishes and color options to cater to a wider range of personal styles. Under the hood, the Series 10 will likely benefit from internal upgrades such as a more power-efficient chipset, enhanced health monitoring capabilities, and improved battery life, allowing users to go longer between charges.

Apple is set to officially unveil the Series 10 alongside the highly anticipated iPhone 16 at its September 9 event.
