At the recent WWDC keynote, Apple revealed a series of significant updates to the Messages app as part of the iOS 18 release. These enhancements promise to make messaging more dynamic, convenient, and expressive for users.
One of the standout features is the overhaul of tapbacks. Previously limited to a handful of reactions, users can now send any emoji as a tapback. This flexibility allows for a broader range of expressions, from the quirky eyes-looking emoji to the playful barf emoji. Additionally, stickers can now be used as tapbacks, with frequently used emojis and stickers accessible with a simple swipe.
The classic tapback options are also getting a visual refresh. Icons like the thumbs up and heart will feature full-color designs, blending seamlessly with the new tapback options.
Another eagerly anticipated feature is the ability to schedule messages. Users can compose a message and choose a specific time and date for it to be sent, eliminating the need to remember to send important messages later. This option is easily accessible by selecting the Send Later feature after pressing the plus button on the left side of the screen.
For the first time, Messages will support rich text formatting, allowing users to bold, italicize, underline, or strikethrough their text. This addition, along with eight new special text effects—big, small, shake, nod, explode, ripple, bloom, and jitter—adds a new layer of customization to conversations.
Apple also confirmed that iOS 18 will include support for RCS (Rich Communication Services), enhancing communication with Android users. While iMessage conversations remain unchanged, RCS will improve the reliability and functionality of mixed-device group chats.
Additional exciting features include Genmoji, which uses AI to generate custom emojis, and Image Playground, which allows users to create AI-generated images in various styles. Both tools are seamlessly integrated into the Messages app, providing creative options for users.
Lastly, Messages via Satellite is a new feature designed to assist users in remote areas without Wi-Fi or cellular connections, ensuring that they can still send messages in emergencies.
These updates in iOS 18 are set to significantly enhance the functionality and user experience of the Messages app, offering more ways to communicate and express oneself than ever before.
