Apple is set to enhance its dedicated Sports app with an array of exciting updates, aligning with the launch of iOS 18 and watchOS 11.
A standout feature is the expansion of Live Activities, which will now encompass all teams and leagues covered by the app. This update allows users to view live scores and detailed play-by-play actions directly on their iPhone's Lock Screen, Dynamic Island for newer models, and Apple Watch.
With the introduction of iOS 18, Live Activities will be exclusive to the Sports app and will no longer be featured in the Apple TV app. This change marks a strategic enhancement to provide a more focused and interactive sports viewing experience on mobile devices.
For football fans, the app has been specifically tailored to enhance coverage of the NFL and college football seasons. It introduces a new way to track scoring drives with enhanced visibility of each game’s play-by-play details and includes a dynamic drive tracker to visually represent the ball's position on the field in real time.
Apple also plans to roll out additional improvements to the Sports app later this year, such as a new drop-down navigation menu and upgraded search capabilities, making it easier for users to find and follow their favorite teams and sports.
Currently, the Apple Sports app covers a wide array of major sports leagues including the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and top soccer leagues from around the world such as the Premier League and Bundesliga. Plans are in place to extend coverage to include the Champions League and Europa League, further broadening the app’s reach.
Available for free on the App Store, the Apple Sports app continues to evolve, promising sports enthusiasts a more immersive and convenient way to stay connected with their favorite sports and teams.
