According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is set to debut an AI-powered smart home display by March 2025, marking a strategic expansion into the smart home market.
The six-inch, square-shaped display will resemble an iPad but feature thicker bezels, a built-in camera for FaceTime, and speakers for music streaming. Driven by Apple Intelligence, the device will primarily rely on voice control, allowing users to manage apps, tasks, and smart home products effortlessly.
Apple’s customizable interface blends elements from the iPhone’s StandBy mode and watchOS, offering widgets for weather, calendars, and home controls. The smart display will also feature adaptive sensors, detecting a user’s proximity and adjusting the screen based on distance—showing the temperature when no one is close or activating thermostat controls as someone approaches. Future updates might add external sensors to monitor room occupancy, enhancing the device's contextual responsiveness.
The device, available in silver and black, will require an iPhone for setup and support core Apple apps like Safari, Notes, and Music, though it won’t have an App Store.
Accessories, including wall mounts and speaker bases, will allow it to function as a central home “command center.” Competing with Amazon’s Echo Hub and Google’s Nest Hub Max, Apple aims to price its smart display competitively, bringing new synergy to its ecosystem.
