Apple's Pursuit of Affordable Vision Pro Headset Faces Challenges

Apple Vision Pro

Apple is navigating significant hurdles in its quest to develop a more affordable version of its Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, priced between $1,500 and $2,000. Mark Gurman highlighted in his recent Power On newsletter that the Vision Pro team is grappling with cost reduction strategies that won't compromise user experience.

One proposed solution involves stripping out features like the EyeSight display and using less powerful internal components to lower costs. Another consideration is tethering the headset to an iPhone or Mac to minimize processing requirements and component expenses, albeit at the cost of added cables.

Despite these efforts, Apple engineers face the challenge of balancing cost reductions with maintaining compelling features that justify the price tag. This move comes amid competition from more affordable mixed-reality headsets already on the market.

Additionally, while Apple is rumored to be working on a successor to the Vision Pro, expectations for its release are tempered, potentially not arriving until late 2026. Meanwhile, Apple continues to explore the development of AR-only smart spectacles, though significant technological hurdles suggest these are still years away from fruition.
