Apple Introduces Satellite Messaging in iOS 18 for iPhone 14 and Later

Messages

In an exciting development, Apple has announced the expansion of its satellite capabilities with the introduction of Messages via satellite in iOS 18. This new feature allows users to send texts even in the absence of Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, enhancing communication in remote areas.

Available on iPhone 14 and later models, Messages via satellite enables the sending and receiving of both iMessages and SMS messages through a satellite connection.

This feature includes full support for iMessage functionalities such as emojis and Tapbacks, ensuring that conversations remain as rich and expressive as ever. Additionally, iMessages sent via satellite maintain end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy and security.

Building on the existing Emergency SOS via satellite feature, Messages via satellite provides a critical communication tool for those in areas without traditional network coverage.

While Apple has not disclosed pricing details for this service, it has confirmed that Emergency SOS via satellite remains free for iPhone 14 users for three years. The iPhone 15 models also include two years of complimentary satellite access.
