Apple Faces Automation Challenges Amid Workforce Reduction Plans

In response to the disruptions caused by COVID-19 lockdowns and protests in China during late 2022, Apple is implementing a significant shift in its iPhone production strategy. According to The Information, Apple’s senior vice president of operations, Sabih Khan, directed managers to reduce the workforce on iPhone assembly lines by as much as 50% over the coming years.

To meet this target, Apple has started investing in high-cost automation projects, a departure from its previous reluctance. These automation efforts have played a crucial role in the production of the iPhone 15, incorporating a notable degree of mechanization. However, the complex nature of manufacturing has presented several hurdles.

The report indicates that automation attempts for the upcoming iPhone 16 series faced setbacks, with some processes being abandoned due to a high defect rate. This year, Apple endeavored to use machines for the precise installation of critical components like buttons, the receiver, speaker, and the main logic board into the iPhone chassis. However, these machines encountered difficulties, often failing to correctly fasten the components, which must be screwed in at precise angles.

Apple’s drive towards increased automation is also aimed at diversifying its supply chain beyond China. By enhancing its automation capabilities, Apple plans to relocate more iPhone assembly operations to countries in Southeast Asia, including India, Vietnam, and Thailand.
