Apple is reportedly shifting its augmented reality focus, aiming to develop smart glasses as a more accessible alternative to its Vision Pro headset.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the $3,500 Vision Pro has struggled to gain traction due to its high price, weight, and overheating issues, with sales falling short of expectations.
To address this, Apple’s Vision Products Group is working on a version of visionOS for glasses, codenamed "Atlas," and conducting user studies to refine features and interfaces.
Gurman reports that the development, centered at Apple’s Santa Clara facility, is still in early stages, with a potential launch years away. In the meantime, Apple is also working on a more affordable Vision Pro model, targeting a price point similar to a high-end iPhone, around $1,600, though its release has been delayed.
Additionally, Apple is collaborating with Sony to integrate PlayStation VR2 hand controllers into the Vision Pro, aiming to expand its appeal for gaming.
