Apple executive who invented the multitouch screen and Touch ID on iPhone is retiring

In a notable development, Steve Hotelling, a relatively low-profile yet highly influential Apple executive credited with spearheading innovative technologies across iPhones, iPads, and the Apple Vision Pro, is reportedly retiring from Apple. While departures are customary in any company, Apple has witnessed a series of high-profile exits in 2023, raising concerns among some about potential shifts in the company's culture.

Though not officially announced, Bloomberg reports that Hotelling's retirement is imminent. With a legacy embedded in hundreds of patents, Hotelling is recognized as a driving force behind numerous innovations within the company. His contributions extend to diverse areas, including camera engineering, augmented reality technology, haptic feedback, and the development of ProMotion. Hotelling played a crucial role in the creation of technologies utilized in Apple Vision Pro.

An unnamed source who collaborated with Hotelling described him as the foremost catalyst for innovation in Apple products outside of the chip team. As part of his retirement, Hotelling's responsibilities are slated to be redistributed among several of Jony Srouji's direct reports, including individuals like Alan Gilchrist and Wei Chen.

Change is inevitable, even for influential figures like Jony Ive, who previously departed Apple to pursue endeavors beyond the realm of iPhones, delving into unconventional projects like clown noses. Given Hotelling's impactful history at Apple, it appears that his retirement is a well-deserved transition to a new chapter.
