Amazon began laying off its employees from multiple teams and departments within the company starting yesterday and has got rid of some roles at the company.
This comes after Time's report about Amazon getting prepared to layoff over 10,000 employees this week.
Some of the employees who are being let go from Amazon include those who worked on Amazon Alexa devices as well as Luna Cloud Gaming.
A letter was sent to staff by Amazon Senior Vice President of Devices and Services Dave Limp where he mentioned how the layoffs were a result of an "unusual and uncertain macroeconomic environment".
Limp also claims that employees who are affected by the layoffs will be offered new roles at Amazon and those who can't find new roles will be offered severance packages and support to find new jobs.
Amazon will still continue to support its Devices and Services division but it's unclear what the future of this division will look like with the smaller workforce behind it.
Amazon isn't the only big tech giant to layoff employees. Twitter, Meta, Lyft, Upstart, and more companies have let employees go due to the economic downturn. All companies have also struggled to keep their overgrown workforce from 2020. Companies like Apple have announced hiring freezes.
Amazon has also been seeing a decline in its e-commerce business especially with rising inflation. Amazon stock valuation has dropped by $1 trillion. Amazon is trying their best to get their e-commerce business back to being profitable.
